The Swindon borough boundaries were extended at the end of the 1920's and there was a rash of new building in the northward extension of the town which had swelled to over 50,000 inhabitants. These terraced houses in Somerset Road date from the mid thirties and one like this could be bought new for £400, although end of terrace houses were £25 more. Access to the long back gardens was via a back lane, known as 'backsies' in Swindon.
