The building is a surviving, later extension to Gillespie's Hospital, built in 1803 on the site of Wrichtishousis which belonged to the Napier family. Henry, Lord Cockburn, thought that the old tower's demolition was an outrage, commenting that it was "brutally obliterated" as "the idiot public looked on in silence".
