The new Morrisons store is built on the old carpet manufacturing site beside the river's Back Brook branch. The river through the town was used by the industry to provide water for the wool dyeing process and to take away the waste. In latter years water was drawn from boreholes. The adjacent Stour Vale Mill developed by Lord Ward, High Steward of the Borough, provided a start to many of the major manufacturers who were able to rent space and power for their looms.
