The building on the right is the side of the Old Town Hall, which fronts on West Street Image Next to it, with an Italianate clock tower, is the former Post Office. Just left of centre is the former Free Library and Art Gallery (1882-5), in a Baroque style. The building on the left hand corner was built for the National Provincial Bank (1873). All these buildings were used by Gateshead Council until the new Council Buildings were completed in the 1980s.
