St Andrew's church in Walpole St Andrew - turret

St Andrew's church > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1824145 as we see it today was built during the 15th century, using limestone for the body of the building and brick for the tower, which has a small cell built into the buttress > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1824178 at its south-west corner. Beside the 15th century font > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1824240 an older font bowl > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1824249 believed to date from the 12th century and originating from an older church which stood on this site, can be seen on the floor. The Jacobean pulpit > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1824211 rests on a 15th century stone base and has a wrought-iron hourglass stand attached to it. Apart from one medieval bench all pews are Victorian, as are the roofs. The east window > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1824202 was installed in 1897, the glass is by AL Moore. Some of the stalls in the chancel were made from 15th century pews. The royal arms > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1824253 are for George III (1801-1820). There is an ongoing problem with what is believed to be salt-erosion, perhaps caused by the very effective damp proofing of the floor which results in salt-laden moisture to be drawn upwards and corroding the limestone piers, rather than to evaporate. In an attempt to prevent further damage part of the floor has removed. St Andrew's church was declared redundant in 1986 and is now in the care of the Redundant Churches Fund.
