Burton is a secluded, picturesque village situated on the Dee estuary eight miles N.W. from Chester, the Welsh Mountains visible in the distance. It is founded in the rock (the new sandstone of the Triassic series) which here and there crops up so prominently that some of the cottage doors are approached by six or eight steps cut into the stone, presenting a peculiarly antiquated appearance.
