In the nineteenth century, whalers set out from Peterhead to hunt the Greenland Right whale around Spitzbergen and Greenland. The blubber was packed in barrels and brought back to Peterhead for rendering into whale oil. This quay onto which the barrels were offloaded is still called Blubber Box Quay. The modern oil tanks, by a twist of fate, lie on top of the old boiling premises.
