Inside the little round-towered church of St Mary at Bartlow are the remains of three 15th-century wall paintings. On the south wall are St Michael weighing souls and St Christopher ferrying the Christ Child; on the north side St George did battle with the Dragon. Over the years St George has been obliterated but his fearsome and tremendous adversary remains, still breathing fire and suffering only the minor indignity of having one corner of a memorial to Sophia Johnson pinned to his flank.
