This modest premises in Broad Street was the office of the so-called 'Hay Poisoner', Major Herbert Rowse Armstrong, the only solicitor to be hanged in Britain. In 1921 he was found guilty of using arsenic to murder, first, his wife and then of attempting, by the same means, to kill a rival solicitor in the town. In recent years the present incumbent of the practice has written a book questioning the safety of Armstrong's conviction after accessing the defence files on the case.
