From this angle, the sun is reflecting off the surface of the nearer finger, highlighting each screw on every letter. Some of these signposts have fairly modern replacement fingers, whose letters are affixed by an adhesive method – which don't have screw-holes and have a shinier surface – so we can safely assume these particular letters have been here for very many years.
