This is the eastern portal of the 2042 yard Braunston Tunnel, one of two long tunnels on the Grand Union Canal between London and Birmingham (the other is at Blisworth, and is almost half as long again). The British Waterways information sign gives various items of useful information, including a ten figure grid reference which actually relates to the portal rather than the sign.
