There are three well spaced locks at Minworth, changing the water level by a total of 16ft 8in (about 5.1 metres). The lock's top gate is open to admit the approaching narrowboat. The A38 road runs close by the canal for about four miles, and alongside it here. Note: Boat owners mooring for the night a short way ahead near Tyburn Bridge, may like to visit the nearby Tyburn House pub. There, despite what it says in the Nicholson's guide to the Waterways, they can enjoy a (very) limited selection of real ales, probably ending up with a refreshing pint of Banks's Bitter served at the same temperature as Carling Extra Cold. It's enough to drive one to Guinness! (Try ordering three pints of bitter when you arrive, and have a meal while you're waiting for them to warm up). Maybe things have now improved.
