The uneven ground is explained by the fact that this section of the old Burgh Muir, west of Whitehouse Loan, was an old sandstone quarry from at least the 18th century and perhaps earlier. The quarry holes are said to have provided the golfing fraternity with good natural bunkers. This spot was mooted as a possible site for the termination of the Union Canal, opened in 1820, although that plan, shown on maps of the time, was abandoned, presumably because it would have involved an expensive system of locks to take the canal uphill.
