I've always wondered why the statue of Sir John Franklin faces west and not north-west. It was this notable explorer who set out to find a north-west passage through the Canadian Arctic and died there. He probably turned his back on the dwindling market. Franklin's ships drew water from here - http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4776203 Across High Street, Barclays Bank is undergoing some remedial work. The bank stands near to the HSBC, which has since closed. The opening, far left, leads to a car park behind the pub.
