The fine station canopy ispart of Monkseaton Station which dates from 1915, replacing the old Whitley Bay Junction station nearby. It catered in the main for holidaymakers making for the coast. Formerly a heavy rail station, it was taken over by the Tyne and Wear Metro in 1980 and is now well used by commuters.
