Two gateposts that once belonged to Abbeyhill House, the residence of Fletcher Norton, an English barrister appointed Baron of the [Scottish] Exchequer in 1776. He died in 1820. Although the house has vanished, the family name is perpetuated in the names of several streets built on the former estate in the Abbeyhill area. Norton Place was renamed Montrose Terrace in 1876. "Sat awhile with Lord Kames in the forenoon. Found Mr Baron Norton sitting with him. He was violent against the people at large having the choice of their representatives in Parliament because they in his opinion were not proper judges, and much riot is occasioned by popular elections.
