Ex Great Western 2-8-0 5224 having just arrived at Alton Station on a service from Alresford. The 5205 class, of which this is an example, were built in 1923 to a design of C B Collett, as a development of the 42XX class designed by G J Churchward, and were used primarily for coal trains in South Wales. It was a recent arrival on the Mid Hants Railway, having previously been based on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. On the right are two South West Trains Class 450 units, the one on the left having just arrived from London (Waterloo), with the one on the right about to depart for there.
