Occupation crossings (bridges or level crossings) were provided by the railway where the railway's construction split someone's property. The crossings allowed the landowner (or his tenant) to continue their work or occupation - hence the name. Judging by the quality of the structure the local landowner obviously had some influence! The railway in this case was the line from Leeds via Harrogate to Ripon and Northallerton, opened 1848 and closed 1967.
