Now a busy dual carriageway. In fact, it was one of my favourite time trial courses, on which I raced my bike from 1997 to 2006. The 10, 25, 50 mile courses all passed this point. My best time in a "10" was 23.10, achieved in 2003. On the left side of the road is the Hen and Chicken pub. The original turnpike road passed right beside the pub, and horses were changed at this point. My great-great-grandparents were living at No.4 Turnpike Cottages (left of picture, hidden by trees) according to the 1881 Census. I wonder whether my ancestors looked out, in 1881, at the new-fangled bicyclists riding past on the turnpike road, and imagined that their descendants, including "young" Peter Trimming, would some day go racing past the house ....... somehow I doubt it!
