"Motte, Balcastle: This motte was fashioned from a natural knoll and varies in height from 3.6 to 12.2m, its roughly oval summit measuring 36.5 by 25.9m. It is flanked on three sides by streams and on the N by slight traces of a ditch about 5.5m broad. A track ascending the NE flank of the motte is unlikely to be original, and was no doubt made comparatively recently, when the top of the motte was periodically cultivated." Quoted from RCAHMS.
