Backfilling the bridge

Now that the abutments and central pier for the bridge have been built, the cutting under the bridge has to be backfilled before the bridge deck is erected. This is a safety precaution required to prevent workers falling from the bridge to the bottom of the cutting. The bridge piers are surrounded with plywood, partly as a means of protecting them from physical damage from machinery, but equally importantly to prevent them getting stained by the soil.
