Local taxis, seen here in a line in the middle of the photo, also use the bus station site. When the first taxi service (horse-drawn of course) began in Newport in the mid 19th century, an observer commented that the supply of taxicabs far outweighed the demand. If this photo is a typical scene, that statement holds true a century and a half later.
