The manor bakehouse, a public bakehouse was provided on this site from medieval times, by the lord of the manor, for the use of Wakefield people. It spared them lighting substantial fires in their own homes for baking bread, pies, etc. and was an important facility in a town where most of the buildings were made of wood and hence highly combustible.
