Located on the south side of Chepstow Road, near Acacia Avenue and Hawthorn Avenue. In September 2009, there is a painted multi-coloured scarf on the box, in the style of the fourth Doctor Who, played by Tom Baker. The box was Grade II listed in 1999. Police boxes were formerly used by officers on the beat for communication, and were immortalised by Doctor Who's time travelling TARDIS. With the advent of personal radios in the 1970s most were demolished, leaving the 1930s Somerton box the last one in Newport. But concrete cancer is causing concrete in the structure to crack, so it has been fenced off for safety reasons. It is hoped the damage can be reversed, with the box refurbished as a city tourist attraction.
