The square is a riot of colour at this time of year. Canonbury Square was first opened to the public in 1884 and donated to Islington Council in 1888 by the Marquess of Northampton. According to a plaque by the gate, George Orwell, Evelyn Waugh, Samuel Phelps, Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell have all lived here at various times.
