St Peter and St Leonard, Horbury (1)

The elegant tower of the church designed by John Carr in 1790-94. Grade I listed. Carr was born in Horbury (and was buried in a vault under the church) and paid for the building. It cost £8,000, but Carr died a rich man, the fruits of a long career as a respected and successful architect. The success of the tower is largely down to Carr's skilful handling of the transition between the different stages. (See also Image)
