The small village has an active cricket club which plays in the Gloucestershire County League. The author Laurie Lee was born in the nearby town of Stroud and moved to Slad in the next valley at the age of three. Despite service with the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s he was 83 when he died in 1997. Laurie Lee purchased the cricket field in 1972 to protect it from developers. Doubtless he made some provision to protect the land in perpetuity after his death.
