This handsome neo-Georgian building, built in 1929, was sponsored by William Julien Courtauld, a major benefactor to Braintree and designed by J Stuart. Adjacent to the former Braintree High School (1906), now itself a Social Services office, this building was the Gymnasium, with the low square wings seen left and right the changing rooms, boys and girls respectively. It is now the Braintree District Register Office for Births, Marriages and Deaths and a venue for Weddings http://www.celebrateinessex.co.uk/VendorDetails.aspx?VendorId=1878&vrurl=Vendor1878
