The name refers to the various volunteer regiments, especially those in the eighteenth century during the wars with France, when Napoleon was threatening to invade. These threats continued well into the nineteenth century. There was a Volunteer Training Corps in World War One, and in World War Two the Home Guard and Local Defence Volunteers represented a fine tradition. A K6 style telephone box stands beside the sign.
