A memorial to the martyrs of Dorset who suffered persecution and death in the religious upheavals of the 16th and 17th centuries. The bronze figures were sculptured and completed in 1986 by the well-known British sculptress Dame Elisabeth Frink. She was born in Suffolk in 1930 and died at her home in Woolland Dorset in 1993. Dame Elisabeth exhibited throughout the world and amongst her more important works is "Eagle" at the JFK Memorial in Dallas, Texas; "Man on a Horse" in Piccadilly Circus, and the Eagle Lectern in Coventry Cathedral. She is also remembered for her "goggle" men. These figures represent the martyrs. Unshackled, their faith is such that they show no fear in the face of death.
