Modern Thorpeness was conceived by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie in the early 20th century as a private holiday village. This is Westgate, a road off The Whinlands. Across the top of the road is Westbar, designed by William Gilmour Wilson, the tower of which was built to contain a water tank. it too is grade II listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1287172.
