Looking across Harpur Street. The Harpur Centre stands on the old site of Bedford Modern School, and this was the entrance under the Tower. It was only used on ceremonial occasions when I was at the school in the 1960's. As member of the School Choir, I can remember going through it in procession to St Paul's Church for the Founder's Day Service. Now it is just one entrance to the shopping centre, and houses a flower stall. The Harpur Suite is used for functions such as dinners, meetings, concerts, conferences. In the 1960's it was the main Library (which is now in a building to its left).
