The pitch on the RAF Saxa Vord camp was opened in about 1990 and was only the second astroturf pitch in Shetland, after the one at Brae (another has opened since on Whalsay). Used for a variety of sports, it was in a rather exposed position and could be very windy in winter. With the closing of the camp the pitch passed to Saxa Vord Resort but has been, quite literally, gathering moss.
