The charity “Hearing Dogs for Deaf People” www.hearingdogs.org.uk/ trains dogs to be hearing companions for deaf people, and they are trained to alert their owner to domestic noises such as the door bell or the pinger on the microwave. Part of the training involves getting the dog to get to know its planned owner and the relevant domestic sounds and this is done by having the owner come and stay in one of these units. Instead of barking, the dogs alert the deaf person by touch, using a paw to gain attention and then leading them back to the sound source. For sounds such as a fire alarm, the dogs will lie down to indicate danger.
