The "modern" stone Christchurch stands in Avenue Road, but the original was a second hand iron church which arrived by railway in pieces and was assembled on land at the bottom of this road in 1866. By 1873 the lady of the Manor, Lady Foley, donated land on what was to become Avenue Road for the new church to be built.
