Cuthill, the Butcher's in the Victorian suburb of Marchmont in South Edinburgh is one of the few shops in the area to have retained its original mid-Victorian frontage. The present-day City Council's attitude to conservation in this area can be judged from the "wheelie-bin" eyesore reflected in the shop's window. These communal bins were introduced across the city to rationalise refuse collection, but seem to be regarded by most Edinburgh people as a hideous addition to street furniture amid buildings of architectural merit.
