Until recently an isolated fragment of canal behind filled in sections. It has now been reunited with the rest of the canal and, through the Falkirk Wheel, connected to the Forth Clyde Canal. It is now possible to cross Scotland by canal unimpeded. Merchiston is one of the "leafiest" of the "leafy" suburbs.
