For context see Image This is an example of what was designed as a "lamp box", i.e. for fitting to a post (e.g. see Image), although most examples seem to have ended up wall mounted such as here. This is an example of the second version of the lamp box, dating from the late 1890s - the first version had the words "letters" rather than "letters only". Even so it is atypical - note the bolted on slot cover.
