Formerly a canal bridge on the Whitchurch Arm of the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union, the canal now terminates just to the west of the footbridge. The footpath (part of the Sandstone Trail) follows the route of the former canal and plans are ongoing to restore it into the centre of Whitchurch.
