The name Boothroyd appears in the manorial court roll of 1272. The present building was built has a house in the mid-Victorian period and was acquired by Alderman William Smith in 1915. He converted it into a hospital for wounded soldiers, and in 1920 the building was extended and it became an orphanage. In 1961 it became a school for boys with special needs, named after Alderman Smith's adopted son. (Information from 'Buildings of Brighouse' by David Nortcliffe)
