The Border Counties Railway http://www.northumbrian-railways.co.uk/index.php?page=border-counties ran from Hexham to Riccarton Junction on the Waverley Line (also now long closed). It ran through thinly populated and remote countryside but served several small coal mines. This part of the line was opened in 1861 and closed in 1958.
