At the bottom of this slope the pines stop and are replaced by a birch wood. The birches have been bent by the heavy snow and were blocking the paths. There was a fair bit of nannying going on due to the risk of branches breaking under the snow, and there were attempts to close off some forests. While there was some risk, given the time since the last fall of snow, there was no way that the rare chance of doing some high quality forest touring was going to be missed.
