1-3 New Road

The black & white building is known as 1-3 New Road. It has an interesting history. Built about 1572 (this date is on the building) it originally stood where New Road now starts. It was originally the Hop Pole Inn, but was taken down when New Road was built in 1864/5. It was then re-erected in 1867 on its present site. In the process its height was reduced, also restored and altered for its new purpose of bank premises. However, much of the original building remains.
