Greestone Stairs

Greestone Stairs is an ancient walkway from Lindum Road to the Cathedral, the medieval gateway to the Cathedral Close was locked at night. Formerly known as Grecian Stairs, it's actually a misnomer as the name derives from the word 'greesen', the plural of the early english word 'gree' meaning step .... so it literally means "Steps Stairs" !
