Southport was very much a product of the railway age, bringing day trippers and holiday makers from Liverpool, Manchester and other Lancashire towns. It also became a favoured residential area for Lancashire businessmen and has always had a slightly upmarket feel, epitomised by Lord Street where many shops retain their Victorian canopies making it one of the most attractive shopping streets in Britain.
