Turkeytail Fungus (Trametes versicolor)

(Synonym: Coriolus versicolor) This is a common species that is found all year round on dead wood of deciduous trees; it is also known as Many-zoned Polypore. The colours shown by this species are extremely variable, although they are always arranged in concentric zones; compare: Image and Image It is easily confused with Image (and I hope that I have not done so here). The fungi in this photograph were growing on a section of a log near a small stream that flows out from the village of Cardross and onto the beach.
