... 5 January 1889. Inscription on the stone behind the Image I am very grateful to Dave Clark for the following info: The beginnings of The Band of Mercy are documented in "History in Portsmouth" in an article entitled 'REV. THOMAS TIMMINS (1841–1898) - FOUNDER OF THE BAND OF MERCY' http://www.history.inportsmouth.co.uk/people/timmins.htm . Dave is not sure about the "Pelican" annotation. Apparently the Band of Mercy was the forerunner of Animal Liberation Front (ALF). A part of their history that the RSPCA will not be proud is at http://www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk/policy/animal-rights-extremism/the-early-history-of-animal-rights-extremism/ .
