A watermill on this site was mentioned as far back as the Domesday Book though this building dates from the 18th century. It remained a working mill until 1927, it became a tea room during the 1930s and passed into private hands until 1966 when it was given to the Sussex Trust for Nature Conservation which later became the Sussex Wildlife Trust. The mill has been restored but there are no plans to make it work again. The Woods Mill site includes a number of other buildings used as offices and an education centre as well as extensive grounds which are open to the public all year round.
