Kettil'stoun, Kettlestoun? The former was the original name, first recorded in the 12th century. By the 17th, it had become Kettlestoun. This recent housing development has Kettil'stoun Mains as its entrance road in homage both to the original landowner, Kettil and to Kettlestoun Mains farm on which it was built. The road through the estate leads to Kettlestoun Brig under the Union canal. The A706 heads left to Linlithgow and right to Bathgate.
