The Primitive Methodist Memorial Church was built in 1857 as a replacement for the small original building. Mow Cop is very much associated with the Primitive Methodist movement, in 1807 a camp meeting led by Hugh Bourne and William Clowes began the religious revival known as Primitive Methodism.
